Artificial Intelligence: From Concept to Application

The curriculum “Artificial Intelligence: From Concept to Application” is an educational programme developed by the Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNET, with the aim of strengthening students’ competencies in understanding artificial intelligence, its application in everyday life, and its impact on society.

As part of the BrAIn project, curricula have been developed for primary and secondary school students. Through play, exploration, and practical tasks, students acquire fundamental knowledge about emerging technologies, develop critical thinking skills and learn to navigate the digital environment responsibly.

RESEARCH AND RECOMMENDATIONS

As a partner in the BrAIn project, the Catholic University of Croatia is conducting the first longitudinal study in Croatia (2023-2029) on digital technology usage habits among students, parents, and education professionals, with a focus on the well-being of children and young people. A pilot study conducted during the 2024/2025 school year included primary and secondary school students, their parents, teachers, professional associates, and school principals. It provided initial insights into the ways and frequency of digital tool use, as well as their effects on students’ emotional, social, and cognitive functioning. The research combines quantitative and qualitative approaches and serves both advisory and evaluative roles within the project.

The experimental implementation of the curriculum was simultaneously accompanied by action research involving primary and secondary school teachers from across Croatia, selected through a public call.

Based on the results of these studies, recommendations have been developed for students, parents, teachers, school principals, and education policymakers. Guidelines for the effective and pedagogically grounded use of AI, as well as a Framework for students’ digital literacy and well-being, are currently in development
